The 3 Rs: Reading, Reviews & Recs.
Let's chat about books!
I had not read anything by this author before, but the cover of the book and the title had me captivated for some time. Andrew and Nicola - the two protagonists of this book are deeply broken people - most affected by their failed marriages and how they were treated by their exs. Andrew meets Nicola when he ventures to Cornwall, England to partake in a Stone Hedge construction class - he's an architect. Nicola is an artist in residence in this quaint town. Andrew's landlord's daughter, Lee is a youthful spirit that binds the two together as they attempt to work through their brokenness. The Boscastle Flood is probably the real main character of this book, as the story is waiting for this real live event to take place. Every chapter has a section that foreshadows the coming event. And we think to ourselves, what will happen to the beloved characters we're growing to love in this little town? Will tragedy strike our star crossed lovers?I always enjoy a good read in the far off corners of England. I love the quaint little town of Boscastle as described by the author. The characters are wonderful. The story is not a mover and shaker, but compelling. And since the flood is thrown out there in the first chapter, the reader is on edge with every thunder cloud, and every rain drop, wondering, "what will it all mean?"There's a little bit of witchcraft thrown into this story - totally unnecessary. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, but bumped it up to 4 because what happens in this book is very exciting.Recommend: For literary fiction lovers.
